Who? Frank Garnish created
the Comets Athletic Club
over 40 years ago to provide sport, recreation, and cultural
opportunities for the youth of Area A. In 1993 the “Comets
Sport, Recreation, and Culture Society” registered as
a non-profit organization with a local Board of Directors
and deep roots in the community. The day-to-day operation of
the Comets is the responsibility of the Executive Director,
a position which Frank Garnish still holds. |
|
What?
The Comets have been a fixture in the Cedar, Cassidy, and
South Wellington area for over 40 years. Originally a sports
club, the Comets gradually expanded their programs to fill
many of the needs of our community’s youth. Comet Youth
Programs now include: Basketball, T-ball, Volleyball, Floor
Hockey, Softball, Outdoor Education, Summer Recreation
Camps, Summer Sport Camps, and Invitational Sport
Tournaments. We anticipate over 1000 participants in our
Comet programs this year.
|
|
When? Comet programs
are offered throughout the year, each in season. Extra
summer programming is sponsored in the form of Skill
Development Camps, Activity Day Camps, and Outdoor Education
Camps supported or directed by the Comets are available
during July and August.
|
|
Where?
Program participants are attracted from Ladysmith to Nanaimo
with the majority coming from the Cedar Community Schools
catchment area. Comet programs are supported by the Cedar
Family of Community Schools and utilize community and school
district facilities throughout the area. Availability of
adequate facilities, proper equipment, and trained,
qualified, supervisory staff are the factors limiting
program availability.
|
|
How?
Supported through program registration, fundraising efforts,
donations, equipment rentals, and sponsorships, the Comets
are recognized throughout the community for our quality
programs and excellent staff. Comets competitive teams have
participated in over twenty-five BC Championship Tournaments
winning an enviable 8 BC Championship Titles.
